Five years ago this Christmas I was looking for an opportunity to respond to critics of the Christian faith who, in Scrooge-like fashion, said that Christianity was a relic of the past and needed to be driven from public life. I wanted to write an article for a secular publication that made an opposite argument. But how could I do it in a way that resonated with reasonable non-Christians?
I finally landed on the idea of using George Bailey and the Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life to make my point. I titled the column “When Bedford Falls Becomes Pottersville.” CNN published it and the piece quickly went viral. It is every bit as relevant today as when it was first published in 2011. You can read it here. I hope you enjoy it.
